1) You. Who you
are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what
are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you
see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
I am a
mom of three with a very fast paced career that takes up a lot of my time. I’m
also a student. Before choosing the path I am currently on in Accounting, I was
a cosmetologist. I started working in a salon at 14 years old sweeping up hair
and it quickly became a love of mine. I’m still able to practice what I love on
the side, but it isn’t the same. My business idea of providing cosmetology
services is based on my love and also the need I have now. I can’t always make
it to the salon so I end up neglecting what I love from both sides. I’d like to
see my business help others and still be in the atmosphere of cosmetology.
2) What are
you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other
words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).
I’m offering a chance to
have your styling needs when you can have them. I can help the busy professional
or the working mom/dad that can’t find time to schedule that next haircut or
color. If you have a date but didn’t have time to prepare, Style on the Run can
try to be there when you are ready no matter the time.
3) Who are
you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the
demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think
especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?
All my
customers are lacking time for themselves. They can be young or old, but they
are busy without the time to cater to their own cosmetic needs during business
hours. I envision helping a lot of single moms, young professionals and
business owners who just can’t find enough time in the day.
4) Why do
they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as
customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will
actually pay you money to use your product or service.
I care because it is a huge
issue for me. I have three kids, school and work that requires more than 40
hours in a week to be met. If I didn’t have the skills and experience to do my
own hair, I’d be a mess. There is no time to get away for a few hours during
the days. Even doing my own maintenance, it is in the middle of the night. I
think people would pay a premium to take care of these things on their time. It
makes you feel good about yourself when you are put together.
5) What are
your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else?
Also: what do you have that nobody else has?
I think
I have the insight from both sides. I can truly evaluate every aspect of my
business idea in an objective way. I have the vision to see it through.
I
think my business concept has the cohesiveness to succeed. These five elements
meet each other in every way. I do not forsee the actual idea being an issue,
but perhaps the logistics of implementing the site and community of
cosmetologists and their availability. The only thing I would consider a large
hurdle would be location.
Hey Deanna,
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea but I am unsure of how you plan on providing the service to your customers. Are you going to try to go to them and give them a haircut wherever they are at the time when they ask? If so, I do believe that it can work. And I also believe to have an app for it could definitely help your business. I agree with how you focus your customers on those who are busy, because a lot of people do not have the leisure time to go an appointment and need stuff done quicker.

Hi Deanna,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this opportunity on your "idea napkin"! I think that this is a good business idea in the making. Hopefully, after growing to a large enough size you could hire other cosmetologists and be able to branch out over a very large city. I think that your idea does have the ability to succeed. My sister could really use a cosmetologist's help with her hair; ever since I left for college she has no one to fix her hair every morning before school so doing simple hair styles like a crown ponytail are difficult for her (she sometimes texts me in the morning to complain about her hair lol). I think you should definitely create an app for this idea, maybe base it off of an Uber app which works off of need-based clients as well. Unfortunately, I don't get my hair cut that often because I grow my hair to donate it, but I would definitely use your service for my major hair cut days!
My idea is different than yours, but it is also trying to fix a need. If you have a chance, check it out here: http://plantflourishgrow.blogspot.com/2016/02/idea-napkin-1the-cat-connection.html
Hey Deanna! I love love love that I finally read an idea dealing with cosmetology. It's a growing market that has so many opportunities for innovation. I have no personal experience in the cosmetology field, but I have taught myself to do makeup well and I do my friends all the time. When I first began thinking about opportunities, the market for cosmetology first came to mind. This idea even slightly crossed my mind! I love this idea and I think there is a market out there for it! ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! Thinking back to instances when I had things going on in the morning but then had a date or event to go to at night and how rushed I ended up being to get hair, makeup and wardrobe ready to go, I think this is a great solution to a problem I think a lot of people face. I think your demographic is great, in this day and age so many of us are constantly on the go and I think many would benefit from a stylist on the go as well.
